JANUARY 31ST, 2008: Over 1900 colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, faith organizations, civic groups and businesses came together in the biggest national teach-in in US history. Organizing teams sponsored panels, workshops, theater events, technology fairs, poetry readings, keynotes, sculpture displays, poster sessions and debates on the topic of Global Warming Solutions for America engaging over a million Americans.
The event was called “Focus the Nation”, and it did just that. Campus discussions brought top scientists, businesspeople, and leaders from the media, faith and entertainment worlds into intergenerational dialogue about clean energy solutions to global warming. Over 78 members of the US Congress, the US Senate, and Governors—one third of this group were Republicans—and hundreds of state representatives, mayors and city councilors were involved. Senators Obama, Reid and Kerry; Congresspeople Pelosi, Inglis and Markey, and Governor’s Schwarznegger, Crist and Nepalitano endorsed or participated in the teach-in.
The teach-in started with a launch webcast, The 2% Solution—with close to a thousand live audiences across the country. Media coverage was widespread; over 1000 articles ran nationally, including in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, USA Today, Forbes and Business Week. Visit You-Tube to watch some of the video produce that day. Nationwide, the teach-in delivered face-to-face engagement, focused on the critical congressional actions of the next few years that will determine the future.
Last January’s national teach-in was directed by Professor Eban Goodstein at Lewis & Clark College. Goodstein is now leading the NATIONAL TEACH-IN ON GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTIONS set for next February 5th. Over this next critical year, join us and help mobilize millions of Americans next February. Ignite the grassroots movement that can change the country, and change the future.
